Separate Service VPC for Their Amazon Workspaces

When setting up your Amazon WorkSpaces, it is essential to consider a separate service VPC to ensure governance and security. This VPC design enables traffic separation, allowing you to manage your WorkSpaces environment efficiently.

AWS uses a private IP address range for the management network interface, which terminates client connections. The management network interface is used to manage each WorkSpace, while subnets are permanent in nature and cannot be changed once created.

Each WorkSpace has two elastic network interfaces (ENIs), including a management network interface (eth0) and a primary network interface (eth1). When designing the VPC, subnets, security groups, routing policies, and network access control lists (ACLs), consider the following factors:

* Where do your enterprise user accounts reside?

* What types of users will you need to accommodate?

* How many WorkSpaces will you need over time?

Before creating the Directory Services construct, determine the right subnet sizes carefully. Subnets are permanently affiliated with a Directory Service construct and cannot be modified once created.

All AWS Directory Service constructs require two subnets to operate, each in different Availability Zones (AZs). Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) is necessary for running your Amazon WorkSpaces. Each WorkSpace is associated with the specific Amazon VPC and AWS Directory Service construct used to create it.

To deploy Amazon WorkSpaces successfully, three components are required: a directory service to authenticate users and provide access to their WorkSpace; a VPC in which to run the WorkSpaces; and an elastic network interface (ENI) for each WorkSpace. By designing your VPC with these factors in mind, you can create a scalable, secure, and easily managed Amazon WorkSpaces environment.
